Mount Palomar Winery in Temecula is proud to announce two new releases, now available in our tasting room and our online store! We're constantly striving to improve, building on our great traditions and long history of award winning, top quality production. This month we're releasing new vintages of two of our most popular wine varieties - Solanus dessert wine, and our 2011 Petite Sirah.
Solanus - Mount Palomar Winery has a long and well known tradition of producing dessert wines, in particular our Solera Cream Sherry. Both our Sherry and our Solanus dessert wine are made using Palomino and Pedro Ximenez grapes, grown in our vineyard. The grapes then undergo different kinds of fermentation, so that despite coming from the same grapes and both being dessert wines, the wines are very distinct. Solanus is a heavily fragrant wine with prominent scents of butterscotch and carnations. The wine is smooth, with syrupy tastes of Barlett Pear, passion fruit and quince. 2011 Petite Sirah - Wine Club Exclusive! Petite Sirah and Syrah are frequently confused, especially in the United States, but are definitely different varietals. Petite Sirah was produced in the 1860s by Francois Durif by crossing Syrah, the father vine, with Peloursin. Since then California has become the primary home for the variety, traditionally interplanting it with Zinfandel and Barbera, and then harvesting late to produce a field blend and a big, jammy, high alcohol wine. Mount Palomar Winery’s 2011 Petite Sirah has soft scents of lavender, complimented by earthy spice and fresh cedar. It is full in the mouth with firm tannins. The tastes are of cherry black pepper with hints of vanilla balanced with mild citrus tang. This is a robust wine so allow it to breathe a moment and swirl to release its’ full character. January is the first month of the year where we send a new wine club shipment, here's what our incredible winemaker selected for our members to help start the year off right:
2014 Muscato Di Amore - New release! Muscato di Amore is a very popular wine that was produced only once at Mount Palomar nine years ago. The 2014 vintage of this blend of Muscat varietals is scented with pear, lychee, white peach and honey suckle. The feel in the mouth is velvety. Our Muscato di Amore has bright tastes of star fruit, lychee, and peach with a touch of honey. This wine pairs well with poultry, pork and white fish.
Shorty's Bistro White – Award winning wine! In 2014, Shorty's white won a silver medal at the San Diego International Wine Competition. This is a definite crowd pleaser that is fresh, bright and easy to drink. Shorty’s is fragrant with pineapple, peach and honeysuckle. Serve chilled and enjoy tropical tastes of pineapple, lemon, pear and canary melon. Perfectly refreshing on a hot summer day and pairs well with seafood or poultry dishes.
2011 Cabernet Sauvignon – A new release and a wine club exclusive! The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon has rich scents of currants, plum and hot chocolate balanced with the varietals signature character of subdued sweet pepper. The wine is medium bodied and full in the mouth with a smooth finish. The tastes are of plum, sweet nutmeg complimented by light oak elements. This wine pairs well with rich red meat dishes. 2010 Sangiovese - Award winning wine! This wine won a Bronze medal at the Toast of the Coast Wine Competition! Mount Palomar Winery has a long tradition of producing Sangiovese, having been the first grower in the Temecula Valley of this vine. The 2010 Sangiovese is richly scented with lilac and black currants. The wine has a smooth velvety feel in the mouth. The tastes are of plum with touches of strawberry complimented by hints of clove and nutmeg. This wine pairs nicely with red meats, BBQ, pastas with red sauces.

Mount Palomar Winery opened our Solera in 1974, and created our first Solera Cream Sherry in 1978. What differentiates our Solera Cream Sherry from other Sherry, even Spanish Sherry, is our use of a traditional outdoor Solera system and top quality, traditional grapes. Our Sherry is made with two kinds of grapes: the classic Palomino, and Pedro Ximenez. Pedro Ximenez is used to make the finest quality Sherry in Spain, but is not commonly grown or used in California. Our technique is also unique, much of the Sherry produced today is baked, which is not inherently bad, but it creates a flavor that is full and coarse compared to the delicate, smooth, floral Sherry produced in a Solera. A Solera is an old world throw back that is rarely used, even in Spain, and we can say for sure that we use the last outdoor Solera in California, and possibly the last one in the United States. The slow Solera process produces a deep, rich flavor of caramel and hazelnuts, with a long, smooth finish, and aromas of hazelnuts and almonds. In our Solera, barrels of Sherry are set outdoors in the California sun, caramelizing the wine to give it a deep, rich flavor. The wine is moved through a series of barrels on stairs, mixing with wine from previous years, adding depth and complexity. That’s what makes it so consistently delicious – there’s 41 year old Sherry in the bottle, so the wine itself is full of history.
Another thing that makes our Sherry unique is the fact that it’s made in America, but it’s called Sherry. The term Sherry has protected status, and only wines produced in a specific area of Spain and made with Spanish grown grapes can be called Sherry, except for ours. We have such a long history of producing Sherry, and still use our classic recipe and techniques, so we’ve been grandfathered in and still get to use the name. Our Wine Maker, James Rutherford, has a long family history of producing Sherry, too. He’s related to George Yount, the first permanent settler in Napa Valley and the first person to plant grapes there. One of the first wines that he produced was a Sherry, made from Mission grapes.
Our Sherry has 18% alcohol by volume, and 12% residual sugar. The best way to enjoy it may be just to drink it straight in a traditional Sherry glass. It’s smaller than a wine glass, more like a brandy glass, and holding the bowl of the glass in the palm of your hand will warm it and help release the fragrances. It is definitely a sweet dessert wine, and it’s a wonderful accompaniment with shortbread cookies or baklava, or mixed with hot coffee, cream and brown sugar for an after dinner pick-me-up.
Other Sherry facts: The Amontillado referred to in the Cask of Amontillado is referring to a specific kind of Sherry. Sherry has a long production history in California that can be traced back to the California Missions. They used Mission grapes to produce a kind of Sherry called “Angelica”, named for the city of Los Angeles. Sherry, considered a classic Spanish drink, was actually introduced to Spain by the Moors of North Africa. The Grape Varietal Pedro Ximenez came to Spain from the Canary Islands, but is probably also a Moorish varietal.
