Mount Palomar Winery opened our Solera in 1974, and created our first Solera Cream Sherry in 1978. What differentiates our Solera Cream Sherry from other Sherry, even Spanish Sherry, is our use of a traditional outdoor Solera system and top quality, traditional grapes. Our Sherry is made with two kinds of grapes: the classic Palomino, and Pedro Ximenez. Pedro Ximenez is used to make the finest quality Sherry in Spain, but is not commonly grown or used in California. Our technique is also unique, much of the Sherry produced today is baked, which is not inherently bad, but it creates a flavor that is full and coarse compared to the delicate, smooth, floral Sherry produced in a Solera. A Solera is an old world throw back that is rarely used, even in Spain, and we can say for sure that we use the last outdoor Solera in California, and possibly the last one in the United States. The slow Solera process produces a deep, rich flavor of caramel and hazelnuts, with a long, smooth finish, and aromas of hazelnuts and almonds. In our Solera, barrels of Sherry are set outdoors in the California sun, caramelizing the wine to give it a deep, rich flavor. The wine is moved through a series of barrels on stairs, mixing with wine from previous years, adding depth and complexity. That’s what makes it so consistently delicious – there’s 41 year old Sherry in the bottle, so the wine itself is full of history.
Another thing that makes our Sherry unique is the fact that it’s made in America, but it’s called Sherry. The term Sherry has protected status, and only wines produced in a specific area of Spain and made with Spanish grown grapes can be called Sherry, except for ours. We have such a long history of producing Sherry, and still use our classic recipe and techniques, so we’ve been grandfathered in and still get to use the name. Our Wine Maker, James Rutherford, has a long family history of producing Sherry, too. He’s related to George Yount, the first permanent settler in Napa Valley and the first person to plant grapes there. One of the first wines that he produced was a Sherry, made from Mission grapes.
Our Sherry has 18% alcohol by volume, and 12% residual sugar. The best way to enjoy it may be just to drink it straight in a traditional Sherry glass. It’s smaller than a wine glass, more like a brandy glass, and holding the bowl of the glass in the palm of your hand will warm it and help release the fragrances. It is definitely a sweet dessert wine, and it’s a wonderful accompaniment with shortbread cookies or baklava, or mixed with hot coffee, cream and brown sugar for an after dinner pick-me-up.
Other Sherry facts: The Amontillado referred to in the Cask of Amontillado is referring to a specific kind of Sherry. Sherry has a long production history in California that can be traced back to the California Missions. They used Mission grapes to produce a kind of Sherry called “Angelica”, named for the city of Los Angeles. Sherry, considered a classic Spanish drink, was actually introduced to Spain by the Moors of North Africa. The Grape Varietal Pedro Ximenez came to Spain from the Canary Islands, but is probably also a Moorish varietal.

The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon has rich scents of currants, plum and hot chocolate balanced with the varietals signature character of subdued sweet pepper. In 2015 Mount Palomar Winery won 14 medals with 10 different wines in wine competitions. In fact, we won a medal in every single contest that we entered. This year, we plan on being just as successful, and we've already started winning - here are the first five medals that Mount Palomar Winery won in 2016:
2013 Castelletto Dolcetto: This is Mount Palomar Winery's first release of Dolcetto wine, and a bronze medal at the San Francisco Chronicle competition give it it's third win, including another bronze at the Toast of the Coast Wine Competition and a silver at the Riverside International Wine Competition. Dolcetto is a wonderfully deep varietal from the Piedmont region of Northern Italy, and has a bright taste with currants and blackberry balanced by a firm tannin structure.
2014 Castelletto Cortese (Unreleased): Our 2014 Castelletto Cortese also picked up a bronze in the contest, making it a great follow up for our award winning 2013 Cortese. The 2014 Castelletto Cortese will be released later this year, for now we're still pouring our 2013 in the tasting room.
2014 Mount Palomar Sangiovese Rose (Unreleased) - the last of our bronze medals, our 2014 Sangiovese is a follow up to our top winner last year - 2013 Sangiovese Rose. It picked up three medals in wine competitions last year, and we're still pouring it in the tasting room. With a velvety mouth feel, it has tastes of rose, tangerine, apple, and buttered pear, and you can buy it online by clicking here now. The 2014 Sangiovese Rose will be released later this year.
Mount Palomar Limited Reserve Port - A serious fan favorite, Mount Palomar Port took a silver medal at the competition. Made using time-honored techniques, this Port is a blend of vintages that averaged about 6 years in the barrel. The length of time in barrel suggests that this Port should have a tawny nose, but it is in fact more reminiscent of a ruby Port.
Mount Palomar Solera Cream Sherry - The cream of the crop, our Solera Cream Sherry brought home the gold, proving once again that our outdoor Solera (the last one in the country, and possibly the last in the U.S.) produces a superior dessert wine. Mount Palomar Winery has been producing Solera Cream Sherry since 1978, using the traditional Palomino grape and patient aging of at least five years under the sun to create rich hazelnut and caramel flavors and a long, smooth finish. Customers have called our Sherry liquid gold, and the best Sherry they've ever tasted, and only ever regret not buying more.

2015 was a good year for Mount Palomar Winery. We had so many beautiful weddings, shipped so many delicious bottles of wine, and won 14 wine medals in wine competitions - in fact, we received a medal in every contest we entered. November was the last month that we sent a wine club shipment for 2015. Now that we’re getting ready for our first shipment in January 2016, we thought that we’d take the time to look back over our last shipment. Here are the wines we sent to members in November:
2013 Cinsaut Blush - Wine Club Exclusive and a New Release! Our 2013 Cinsaut Blush is a continued tradition of creating fine rose wines at Mount Palomar. Our Blush is slightly sweet, well balanced with natural fruit acids, and is easy a smooth, easy to drink wine.
2013 Dry Riesling – Award Winning Wine Club Exclusive! For the new 2013 Dry Riesling we chose to update and change the style of this wine to have no residual sweetness and include barrel aging. These efforts were rewarded by the wine being medaled just prior to release.

2014 Nouveau – Wine Club Exclusive and a New Release! Nouveaus, or Italian Novellos, represent the first wines to be released of a vintage. Made famous by the French Beaujolais, Nouveau wines are fermented differently than other red wines. These wines have the character of being lighter and brighter and emphasize the fruit elements. Nouveaus are not intended for extended aging so enjoy them early.
Bacchanova - Wine Club Exclusive and a New Release! At our 2015 Wine Club Blending Competition, this wine was deemed the best blend. This wine could easily fit into the Super Tuscan category. The wine has a wonderful and complex fragrance of cherry and strawberry with touches of rosemary and almond.
If you love red wine, and you'd like to receive regular shipments of Mount Palomar Winery's reds, you can join the wine club online here - http://bit.ly/mpwineclub Just select Estate Club red for four bottles every other month, or Villa Club red to receive two. Mont Noir – 2 Bottles! Our Mount Noir is bottled at a smaller size than most of our wine bottles, so in order to avoid shortchanging any of our wine club members; we included two bottles of Mont Noir for Villa Club shipments and four bottles Estate club members. Dark with smoky scents of white pepper, mandarin orange and soft gardenia, Mont Noir feels thick in the mouth. Italian Plum and black cherry are prominent with hints of hazelnut and zesty Citroen. This is a dessert wine and great to sip and savor, but pairs well with soft cheeses, powdered pasties and chocolate.
Brut Sparkling Wine – Our Brut sparkling wine is a classic sparkling wine with a smooth texture, a light sweetness, and a refreshing, crisp finish. This wine is perfect for all toasts, celebrations, and special occasions.
